March News

Hi from North Tyneside Carers with news and updates you will find useful and interesting in your caring role.

This month there will be a couple of changes to our support groups. The Mental Health Carer Group is going mobile and becoming the Walk and Talk Group for Mental Health Carers. They are kicking off the new group by meeting outside the Gibraltar Rock for a walk on Longsands beach.

The All Carers Group that meets in Wallsend Library will be meeting on the second Tuesday of the month again instead of the first week of the month.

Do you care for someone with a complex mental health condition? There are going to be 3 information sessions covering different conditions, see below for more info.

This newsletter has one aim and that is to help you. If you would like us to cover something or focus more on one area, it would be very useful to know. Please feel free to reach out to us at 0191 249 6480 or email us at enquiries@ntcarers.co.uk

Changes to North Tyneside Carers

The organisation has changed how it is managed. It was decided the charity would be more effective in helping carers if it employed an Operations Manager who would oversee an Adult Carers' Team Leader and a Young Carers' Team Leader.

The Operations Manager will also deputise for Claire Easton, the Chief Executive Officer who can now spend more time bringing funding and new assistance to carers in North Tyneside. So welcome Emma Trimnell the new Operations Manager, Kate Rispin the Young Carers Team Leader and Lucy Hodgeon the Adult Carers Team Leader.

Over the last year, the charity has had challenges with recruitment and staff shortages. With the recruitment of new workers and the organisational changes, we are now happily seeing an improvement in how long it takes carers to be referred and receive support.

https://stratus.campaign-image.eu/images/145693000001243247_1_1706349067040_zc-noimage.png

The Mental Health Carers Group has decided to abandon the indoors for a new monthly walk and talk.

It will be a great opportunity to support one another while getting some exercise and maybe see some new sights.

The first Walk and Talk is planned for 2.00 pm Thursday 28th March with people meeting outside the Gibraltar Rock in Tynemouth. The walk will go from there across Longsands beach and end in the View Cafe for a coffee and cake.

If you are a carer for someone with a mental health issue why not come along and experience the new group. Ring 0191 2496480 or email enquiries@ntcarers if you have not attended a Mental health Carer Group before and Ros and Caroline can greet you. Dogs are welcome on the walks.

The survey closes on 31st March 2024 and as a thank you for your time Healthwatch are offering £100 of Love-to-Shop vouchers to a lucky prize draw winner. Share your experiences and fill in the survey here.

If you want to tell them about your experience of dental care for your child or someone you care for, you can complete the survey on their behalf, but please complete a separate survey for each person. If you have any questions about this survey email info@hwnt.co.uk

Happiness Company Workshop-Feedback and Future News

We have had some lovely feedback from carers who have been to the Happiness Company Workshops we helped them to attend.

The events are described as a “powerful and immersive afternoon of tapping into the healing force that exists within all of us.”

Carers said, “…I'm so grateful to you and The Happiness Company for all the good work you do to help lift up carers and encourage self-care, which is definitely what's needed.”

“I find these workshops so beneficial to get through a bit longer before burnout hits.  Thank you so much for this.  Just when I’m starting to feel worthless and overwhelmed these kind of things happen to pick me up a bit.  I really do appreciate it so much.”

We have some more places at these workshops planned, so keep your eyes peeled for our next emails.

1 in 3 Carers could Quit this Year

A new report on carers and work has predicted that over a third of unpaid carers currently working might leave their jobs or reduce their hours. The report, titled 'Creating a Britain that Works and Cares', by the Centre for Social Justice says carers are finding it hard to juggle caring and working amidst cuts in health and social care, and a lack of support.

The cost of these carers leaving work could cost the Government over 6 billion pounds in lost taxes and new benefit claims. The report says these problems could be helped by:

·  delivering ten hours of free home care,

·  £2,000 in free adaptations to make homes more accessible

·  and an increase in the earnings threshold for the carer's allowance, from £139 to £250 a week.
